Chief Justice Of Nigeria: Office Holders Till Date

1.     SIR EDWIN SPEED (1914-1918)

Sir Edwin speed was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1914 to 1918. He was the one that unified the laws of the two colonies to make a single supreme native court under the administration of lord luggard.

2.     SIR RALPH COMBE (1918-1929)

Sir Ralph Combe was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1918 to 1929. He was the attorney general of the protectorate in the year 1912.

3.     DONALD KINGDON (1929-1946)

Donald Kingdon was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1929 to 1946.  He was a British judicial officer. He died at the age of 78 in 1961.

4.     SIR JOHN VERITY (1946-1954)

Sir John Verity was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1946 to 1954.  He was a British expatriate judge. He was born in London and he attended Vale College.

5.     SIR STAFFORD SUTTON (1955-1958)

Sir Stafford Sutton was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1955 to 1959. He was also a British judge and he did in 1991.

6.     SIR ADETOKUNBO ADEMOLA (1958-1972)

Sir Adetokunbo Ademola was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1958 to 1972.  He was an indigenous chief justice of Nigeria.  He was born in 1906 and he died in 1993. He replaced the British judge Sir Strafford Sutton. He was also the first chancellor of the University of Benin.

7.     TASLIM OLAWALE ELIAS (1972-1975)

Taslim Olawale Elias was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1972 to 1975. He was a Nigerian jurist. Taslim Olawale was known for modernizing and revising many laws in Nigeria. He died in 1991.

8.     DARNLEY ARTHUR ALEXANDER (1975-1979)

Darnley Arthur Alexander was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1975 to 1979.  He was a Nigerian jurist. Darnley Arthur Alexander died in 1989.

9.     ATANDA FATAI WILLIAMS (1979-1983)

Atanda Fatai Williams was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983. He was also a former Nigerian Jurist. He was born in 1918 an d he passed away in 2002.

10.GEORGE SODEINDE SOWEMIMO (1983-1985)

George Sodeinde Sowemimo was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1983 to 1985. He was formerly a judge in the treasonable felony charge of the state. He is also a Nigerian jurist and he died in 1997.

11.AYO GABRIEL (1985-1987)

Ayo Gabriel was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1985 to 1987. He was a Nigerian Jurist. He was born in 1922 in Lagos state and he died in 1996.

12.MOHAMMED BELLO (1987-1995)

Mohammed Bello was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1987 to 1995.  He was born in 1930 in Katina state and he passed away in 2004. He was a statesman and also a Nigerian jurist.

13.MUHAMMED LAWAL UWAIS (1995-2006)

Muhammed Lawal Uwais was the chief justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006. He was born on the 12th of June 1936.

14.SALIHU MODDIBBO ALFA BELGORE (2006-2007)

Salihu Moddibbo Alfa Belgore was the chief justice of Nigeria from 2006 to 2007. He was born on January 17th 1937. He is also a Nigerian jurist.

15.IDRIS LEGBO KUTIGI (2007-2009)

Idris Legbo Kutigi was the chief justice of Nigeria from 2007 to 2009. He was born in 1939 and he died in 2018. He was a Nigerian judge. He joined the supreme court of Nigeria in 1992.

16.ALOYSIUS IYORGYER KATSINA ALU (2009-2011)

Aloysius Iyorgyer Katsina Alu was the chief justice of Nigeria from 2009 to 2011. He was born in 1941 and he died in 2018. He was from Benue state. He was also a Nigerian Lawyer.

17.DAHIRU MUSTAPHER (2011-2012)

Dahiru Mustapher was the chief justice of Nigeria from 2011 to 2012. He was the former chief judge of Kano state judiciary from 1970 to 1985. He was also a Nigerian jurist and he died in 2018.

18.ALOMA MARIAM MUKHTA (2012-2014)

Aloma Mariam Mukhta was the chief justice of Nigeria from 2012 to 2014.  She was born in 1944. She was vcalled to the English bar in 1967. She is presently 77 years old.

19.MAHMUD MOHAMMED (2014-2016)

Mahmud Mohammed was the chief justice of Nigeria from 2014 to 2016. He was born in 1946. It should be note that he is a Nigerian jurist and he is presently 73 years old.

20.WALTER SAMUEL NKANU ONNOGHEN (2017-2019)

Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen was the chief justice of Nigeria from 2017 to 2019. He was formerly a judge in Cross river state and also a justice of the court of appeal. He was born on 22nd December 1950. He was nominated by Yemi Osibanjo.

21.IBRAHIM TANKO MUHAMMAD (2019)

Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad is the current Chief Justice of Nigeria and he was appointed in 2019. He was born on the 31st of December 1953. He is a Nigerian jurist. He is the incumbent chief justice of the Federal republic of Nigeria. It is important to note that he was formerly a justice of the Nigerian courts of Appeal.
